The Cardiff University grounds maintenance team began planting bee-friendly wildflower seeds five weeks ago. Since then the seeds have been gently sleeping in the ground, waiting for rain. Unfortunately they have had a long wait! Cardiff had a very dry few weeks. There was enough rain to wet the flowers’ heads, but not enough to give them a good drink.

That’s all changed with the wet week we’ve just had. The seeds are now finally germinating. But are they growing quickly enough?

Fast-growing weeds have also taken advantage of the rain, and the spaces left when we prepared the ground. Our wildflowers will grow higher and better than daisies when they become established, but they have to grow above the daisy-level first...

Will they make it? Stay tuned for more news!
